Pelecyphora (Coryphantha) macromeris ssp. runyonii:
This is the only plant that produces macromerine, a phenethylamine that produces similar psychedelic effects to mescaline and may have been used by the Tarahumara shamans of the Chihuahuan desert. According to phylogenetic study published this year (2022), this species is actually an Escobaria which in turn has been folded into Pelecyphora, making this now Pelecyphora macromeris. It’s an adjustment that some cactus enthusiasts will certainly be very reluctant to make. A very slow growing species.
