The spiny forests of Madagascar are home to a diverse array of sharp plants, mostly in the families Didieraceae (like Alluadia montagnacii) and Euphorbiaceae. These plants are covered in spines as an adaptation to protect against predators and collect what little moisture reaches the most arid region of the island. In cultivation, it is fairly hardy.
