Annual flooding during the dry season functions as a fluvial lifeline to a huge variety of native plants and animals, which have synchronized their biological cycles with seasonal rains and floods, making the Okavango an excellent example of the interaction between climatic, hydrological, and biological processes. The Okavango hosts a total of 1068 flowering plant species, and ten species of fern, together covering 530 genera, as well as some of the world’s most endangered large mammals, including the cheetah, white rhino, black rhino, African wild dog, and lion.
