Related to the yam, Dioscorea elephantipes is the world’s most special potato. Some extremely old plants in habitat have been recorded reaching up to 7 feet in diameter.  Although most Dioscorea in cultivation are much smaller, they are no less impressive—shooting off a vine that grows faster than you can water it. A perfect windowsill plant.

Currently growing in 4" pots

Water: Water regularly in vine, and slightly less when dormant.

Sun Exposure: Southern or western facing windows indoors. Outdoors it likes protection for late afternoon harsh sun. Keep Caudex shaded for a more golden brown color.

Soil: 1/3rd Pumice, 1/3rd Coco Chips, 1/3rd Potting mix.

Temperature: Keep above 32° F.

Fertilize: When in vine, with Super Kabuto Fertilizer.

Dormancy: They are opportunist growers and will go dormant somewhat randomly for 2-3 months out of the year.

Pests and Diseases: Very susceptible to spider mites indoors, however this usually will not kill the plant just make the leaves look faded and yellow. Mist leaves often and don't underwater. Wash them off with soapy water.

Special Notes: Do not not pull out vine.... this can kill your plant (trimming the vine is perfectly fine, leave an inch or two of stem). When young, for fastest growth of the caudex, keep at least the outer edge buried. As it gets more mature you can expose the caudex more, which will increase fissuring. Heat mat, or warmth and lots of water will help it root/re-root.
