The desert xerophytic ferns, also known as chelanthoids, occur on rocky slopes and rock crevasses throughout the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.  The species have developed a variety of adaptations for reducing water loss including going fully dormant during dry periods and appearing to resurrect during wet seasons.
