Friends of the Xeric Bulbs:
Winter in our greenhouse is marked by the waking up of wondrous South African succulents and bulbs, and of course, we made a tee about it. Here’s a little poem we found scrawled on the inside cover of a book on Boophone, describing what’s so special about plants from the Succulent Karoo.
In the land of Succulent Karoo,
Beneath the sun's warm golden hue,
Lives a magic hidden from our sight,
A secret world that blooms at night.
Deep within the earth they lie,
South African bulbs, waiting to fly,
In their slumber, dormant and still,
Until the season's change, they thrill.
When winter fades, and spring draws near,
These bulbs awaken, without fear,
From their cozy underground abode,
They burst forth, ready to explode.
Their leaves unfurl like emerald wings,
As they stretch and dance and sing,
Colors vivid, petals divine,
A floral symphony, so fine.
The Aloe's fiery red spikes arise,
While Crassula's leaves greet the skies,
Lithops, like pebbles, blend with the sand,
And Haworthia's rosettes, so grand.
In this arid and rugged land,
Bulbs from Karoo, a wondrous band,
Teaching us resilience and grace,
Blooming boldly in this sacred place.
So come and witness nature's show,
Where bulbs from Karoo proudly grow,
A lesson for the young and old,
To cherish beauty, brave and bold.
