Taxa Shirt 15: The Corpse Flowers (Union Tokyo):
A Union Tokyo exclusive, but we smuggled a few back stateside.
There is no accounting for taste as they say, and the group of plants commonly called "Corpse Flowers" are a wonderfully redolent illustration of this. In one of our favorite judo moves in the annals of plant trickery, the flowers of these plants (including the largest flower in the world!) trick insects into acting as their pollinators by emitting a smell that is the opposite of the sweet scent of the red rose; the odor of rotting, fetid, disgusting meat. This smell attracts a subset of bugs whose noses are wired differently then ours, for whom a stinky pile of decaying flesh is a 3 star dining experience.
One mans trash is truly another mans treasure!
